Doctor, It Hurts When I Do This

That's it. I can't keep doing this. Time to see a doctor & not only get this foot fixed, but figure out what the heck caused the injury and how to avoid it in the future.

I made an appointment with the Sports Medicine Clinic (Northgate area, north of Seattle) for next Tuesday. Dr. McInnes was recommended to me by a local triathlete friend of mine (who has also had her share of foot injuries lately). This doctor is an endurance athlete himself, and specializes in sports podiatry.

Aside from running a 2-mile fun run next month with my daughter, I'm assuming there's a good chance I may be shutting down my running program for the balance of this year. A lot of you guys & gals have helped me to come to grips with that decision, as hard as it is. If running just short distances three times a week still causes pain, what's the point in continuing? Even in asking that rhetorical question, it's a struggle to even give that up. But knowing that long-term damage could sideline me much longer is enough reason to do the right thing now.

I'll report back after my first visit.

  1. Hope they're able to shed some light on the issue, and come up with a workable solution. Being busted is a drag.

  3. Sorry that you're going through this - again! Getting a sound diagnosis and path forward will make your visit worthwhile. That your Doc is an athlete himself raises to an absolute certainty that s/he will propose a treatment path for you that will allow you to get back into running absolutely as soon as possible, while maintaining your base cardio capacity.

  4. Seeing the sports med doc., for me it was both really difficult and really enlightening. It's amazing how your outlook can change once you figure out what's really going on.

Best wishes for the appt. from one foot injury to another:)

  5. Colin, did you know that Adrienne above is crazy fast? That girl can run. She's also on the DL. Can't wait to hear what the Doc says.

  6. Yes, I know she is much faster than me (it makes me thankful that Brooks picks some of us slow people for their ID program!). Somehow I didn't get the notification that she posted here...so Adrienne, thanks. I hope your rehab is coming along well.

  8. Hi Colin,
I hope that you will be able to find out what the problem is. Keeping my fingers crossed that you will back to yourself soon:)

How old is your daughter? I think it is great that you are going to be running a little with her. Take care and keep the chin up:)

  9. Thanks Johann!
Julie, she's 11 (6th grade). She got to train with the 7th & 8th graders, but not compete in the meets (except one meet where they let the 6th graders run). Most days, she's excited about running (like most kids, she has her days where the attitude is a problem).
