Giving The Boot The Boot

I just returned from a visit to my sports medicine doc with the go-ahead to start transitioning out of the walking boot. Tomorrow I'll wear it 75% of my waking hours, the next day 50%, the next day 25%, then I'm done with it. I've also been given the okay to do some swimming and light (low gear) cycling (on the indoor trainer). While it's not running, at least I'll be able to remind myself what an increased heart rate feels like. I've enjoyed doing strength training, but I've been jonesing for an endorphin fix lately. Not sure I'll get that fix from light spinning and getting lapped by old ladies at the pool, but it's definitely better than nothing!

As I transition away from the boot, I'll be breaking in my orthotics, then will wear them pretty much full-time. I'll visit the doc again on January 1st. At that point, I'll start specific strengthening exercises for my foot (feet), then, at some point, gradually start running. It'll be a long, slow process, but I'm game.

  2. Colin - Glad to hear the progress report. I think you've got an entirely sensible plan going forward. It's good to have a knowledgeable doctor in your corner to help you as you transition while strengthening to assure complete healing while preventing a recurrence. CAUTION (first-hand experience/mistakes talking!): Once you get a fresh taste of the endorphins you've been missing you'll be tempted to run crazily. Just say no!

  3. So Colin, let me guess, you are gonna run a 1/2 marathon next week. No wait, that was the old Colin. Hey, where's Gil? We want Gil!

  4. Thanks Tim.
Mark, you know me well. My wife has already threatened me. I told her that I already have a physical challenge to keep me occupied. Once I can start running, though, it will be difficult to take it easy.
Chris, there's a chance I won't be running anything close to a half marathon until late next year. Man, that was hard to type!
As for Gil, the only thing he's gonna run is his mouth. Got a lot of ideas written down for new vids, but work has gotten in the way lately.
